experiment 1:23 2.18.13 | video art

I have begun experimenting with the Avid Studio software. As I move through this experimental process, I would like the work to be influenced by several movements of the Avant-Garde. I am especially fond of the early film works of Salvador Dali, and the exploration of Surrealism, Futurism, and Dadaism. Dada can be defined as: “A European (France, Germany, Switzerland) artistic and literary movement (1916-1923) that flouted conventional aesthetic and cultural values by producing works marked by nonsense, travesty, and incongruity. It is a nihilistic art movement, found mostly in painting, but also explored in film and was based on irrationality; and negation of the accepted laws of beauty”. Futurism is defined as an “artistic movement originating in Italy around 1910 whose aim was to express the energetic, dynamic and violent quality of contemporary life, especially as embodied in the motion and force of modern machinery”. And last but not least, one of my favorite art movements is Surrealism, It has for many years, been a strong influence on the direction of my art. Surrealism is defined as: “A 20th century literary and artistic movement that attempts to express the workings of the subconscious and is characterized by fantastic imagery and incongruous juxtaposition of subject matter”. It should be an exciting process as I remixed old and new work with this in mind.

  1. sounds like it will be an exciting process. I can def see all 3 schools of thought represented in this video.

Over all (and in a good way) it was a disturbing experience for me, because the images and sounds drew my senses in immediately, but my rational side was screaming at me to run away from the unpredictability and bizarreness of it all. I even felt my heartrate increase – most notably after the baby cry. Maternal stuff must have kicked in. 🙂

Nice work, Walter. Looking forward to more.

  3. That’s really awesome Walter. The sounds you chose complimented the photos. I like it. I almost missed the seagull walking on the pier. The really dark parts threw me off though. Will do another one?

    • Hi Leah, I am glad you found the piece interesting. And yes, I just posted a few days ago the second in this “experiment series”. It is a little more in depth with imagery and sound. I think you will like it. It is entitled: experiment | set the controls.

      • I just watched it. That was neat. I shared it on my FB page.
I liked the horse and the figure with two TV’s. The bell sound at the very end was interesting. What made you add those?

        • Thanks for checking it out Leah. The two segments you mentioned were both installations. The horse scene was a found object river / island installation 1993. And the figure and video is me during my 1991 video installation at High Wire Gallery. It is entitled The World Spins Black/White. You can select the tags to go to earlier posts and learn more about the exhibits. ChurchBells. I thought they would be the perfect way to negate all the negative symbolism of the atomic blast. And perhaps offer a more spiritual solution to a troubled path. And to end the video on a different note.
